Supers

Costumes aren’t something I make much. We never celebrate Halloween. (We don’t celebrate scary, I tell the kids.) But this year the kids went to a birthday party that invited them to dress up like super heroes. They thought this so much fun! Drew pretty quickly said she was going to be Butterfly Girl. And Israel… though Super Robot Boy and a couple others were in the running… of course Sports Boy won out. I love their inventiveness… and that they didn’t just want to be Spiderman and Wonder Woman or something.

I was not really on my game, but the night before the party I had a brainstorm and the next morning fabric, scissors, double sided fusible web (my current favorite stuff on the planet), and my sewing machine were flying.

There they are… Butterfly Girl (probably with the power to fly and love flowers or something) Super baby (with the power to melt anyone’s face into a smile) and Sports Boy who’s shirt says “Any Time Any Game.” Watch out. He means it. 🙂

The headbands and wings were taken from our dress up clothes. I made the butterfly and lettering on the girls’ shirts by putting my fabric of choice on the double sided fusible web, cutting out the shapes/letters I want, and then placing them on the shirts and ironing.

I love Super Baby’s little cape pinned on with diaper pins. The cape I cut from the front of an old t-shirt with the hem of the shirt as the bottom of the cape. There was no need to finish the top or side edges, they don’t fray, just curl a little.

Sports Boy’s cape was made from the back and neck of the same old t-shirt. It was super easy and I got the idea from my friend’s party. Here’s her blog on how she made them. I didn’t paint but opted for cutting the ball shapes and details out of felt and sewing them on. It was pretty fast and easy. Side note… sports boy now wants to wear the football paint every day.

He’s stinkin’ cute and I’m not sure what I’ll do if/when he really plays football.

So, Andrew (husband) wore his Chuck t-shirt and therefore was a super hero. I was a little sad when I had no creativity, ideas, or time left for myself. Butterfly Girl mysteriously vanished for a few minutes and proudly handed me this when she re-appeared.

I feel my super powers were on display anyway… but this was so precious!
