Rainbow Elephant

Elephants are well loved around here. My 1 1/2 year old sleeps every night with “Dawdle” her elephant and she gets extremely excited when she sees a picture of one in a book. She makes a most adorable high pitched “Bwawoooo!” sound just like an elephant, that her daddy taught her. I thought it would be fun to make up a crochet pattern for one and she will likely be getting on this Christmas.

  1. My daughter loves elephants, so I’ll have to make her one:-) This one was just adorable! Are there also a pattern for the ears? I’ve just read through the pattern, but couldn’t find ears…but I’ll figure it out:-)

  2. Great pattern! I’m making a big one for my mom! One quick question, what is the back loop only stitching for? I don’t get what is does, when I tried the arm it just turned out lumpy, I ended up just making my own arm pattern. (Haven’t tried trunk or legs with blo yet) Yours looks so great! Thanks!

    1. Hi, Kate. Thanks! The blo stitches create the little ridge that you see at the end of the trunk, arm, and leg. It helps turn from the flat end to the side. I also loosely stuff these, and it helps keep the shape. Hope that helps.

    2. No problem at all. If you do a flo there, the ridge of stitching will be on the inside… it will tend to form a turn in the opposite direction that a blo would. Sl st to round off just means do sl st so you don’t finish off straight from a sc. This “rounding off” leaves a flat edge.
